I've taken a few pics along the way, but until I hit Cincinnatti, the weather hasn't been particularly condusive to photography. It was still gray/grey, but no precipitation, other than what they call "freezing fog". It's kind of cool actually, like a mist on the windshield that dissipates in a couple of seconds.
I'd also been driving on Hwy 65 South, and the scenery is pretty much the same as from any other major route.
Cincinnatti was interesting, though an unintended diversion. GPS is amazing, and not only is it very distracting, its actually not much help sometimes, especially when the directions are really not contextualized. Yes, there is a 3D map, colour-coding and other stuff, but what it doesn't show is where the heck you actually are. If you zoom in, there is too much detail; if you zoom out, you lose track of the specifics. I have to assume, based on the popularity of the devices, that it requires a bit more practice and getting used to. I still like maps, but even more, I like "let's find out what's over this way..."
The weather started to break as I got closer to Kentucky, and now it's actually pretty nice. I just missed a chance tour the Jim Beam plant, but I should be able to pick up some of the product around here somewhere
I stayed in an "economy" hotel in Glendale, KY last night. It wasn't all that bad; the bed was comfortable, the sheets and pillows clean and fresh, good TV, and lots of hot water. The WiFi on the other hand more Wuuh, Wuuh, Eye, yi, yi, fuuh, fuuhh....
Then I found one of my 16GB memory cards is either defective or otherwise became corrupted, eating many of the few pictures I did take, especially a spectacular sunset from a roadside rest area. I tried one recovery program this morning, and am running a second trying to recover the files as I write this. So far, all bad sectors. Sigh.
I'm at a McDonalds in Bowling Green, KY. McD's has a McCafe Cappucino that's as good as anything I've had at 4X the price, and free G WiFi. A fellow came over and commented on my tablet PC. He left and came back several times, and must have talked with me for a good 15 minutes, telling me about how he used to run the motor pool on a Tandy computer in the army back in the early 80's, about MagicJack for VOIP, etc. There's an older guy with a really thick southern accent at the next table with what I have to assume is his granddaughter, sharing french fries and a Coke. A nice bit of together time? Not quite. She's busy doing homework and he's yapping away on a cell phone. He hasn't stopped talking for easily 20 minutes, and she keeps telling him to not talk so loud, looking around in embarrassment. Very entertaining.
I took backroads to get here, and it's nearly 3:30 already. I had hoped to find the Corvette or Camry plant for a tour, but earlier I spent an hour in Cave City, KY talking with a fellow about his bourbon balls (no, his name is not Pete Schwetty). Perhaps I will elaborate in a future entry, but talk about tasty!
Depending on what I find in a search as soon as I finish this, I may stick around here for a while longer or just head to Nashville for the evening/night. I plan to head off to Memphis in the morning. Assuming I have better 'net access and its not my camera that is messing up, I hope to have some images to post.
All is well otherwise; more later.
Sounds like your trip is off to a good start! Looking forward to seeing your photos when you're able to get everything working! Safe journey.
